Norfolk's finest Alan Partridge will add another string to his talented bow this year in the form of garden design.

The fictional character, played by Steve Coogan, will be collaborating on the design of the Alan Partridge Sound Bath Garden with Norfolk-based design company Carey Garden Design Studio at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival.

In a horticultural first, Alan Patridge's garden will celebrate the new series of his podcast 'From The Oasthouse' which is released on 30 June. RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival runs this year from 1 to 6 July at Hampton Court Palace.

The garden itself reflects Alan's 'meticulous approach to design, aesthetics and materials', and offers a tribute to structure, durability and personal resonance.

Carey Garden Design Studio are fresh from RHS Chelsea Flower Show where the husband-and-wife duo behind the company, Joe and Laura Carey, designed the gold-winning Addleshaw Goddard: Freedom to Flourish Garden.

The Alan Partridge Sound Bath Garden showcases the Alan Partridge name in sound wave form, and the metalwork used throughout the garden is finished in the same gold used on Subaru GC8 Impreza alloy wheels.

There are sculptural speakers throughout the garden, through which you can hear Alan Partridge's voice. Designers Joe and Laura said: "We developed the idea that Alan would want to showcase his broadcasting mastery... We have had a test-run of the garden during the pre-build stage, and the moment we heard Alan's voice come through the sculptural speakers - everything made sense, in a very funny, very Alan sort of way."

Alan Partridge himself said: “As someone not poor enough to have ever lived in a flat, gardens have been a feature of my domestic life for decades. So I can think of nowhere I’d rather announce the new series of my podcast than alongside the Royal Horticultural Society which - after the Royal Society, the RSPCA, the RSPB, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and of course the Royal Society of St George - is arguably our most respected Royal Society.”

The design of the garden is very practical, with every element being rooted in 'authenticity'.

Plants featured in the garden include Acer campestre (field maple) and Verbascum pulverulentum (hoary mullein) which were enjoyed by Alan Partridge on his countryside rambles. The palette is inspired by the Norfolk landscape.

Joe and Laura said of the collaboration: "We've worked hard with the wider team to navigate the world of Alan Partridge coming to life in garden form. Our prior knowledge of Alan's world was pretty strong to start with, but we have gone deeper into the narrative as the year has progressed. It's been a true venture in both creativity and realising a brief - we're pretty confident it's never been done before (not like this anyway!)

"It's been a delicate balance between delivering a garden that's horticulturally accurate and beautiful in its own right - whilst allowing Alan's personality to be the primary focus and lasting impact when you visit the space. We've been working on this under strict confidentiality for a long time, so as to not spoil the surprise for the huge fanbase that will no-doubt be very excited to learn that Alan is coming to Hampton."

They added: "Designing for Alan has been a completely unique experience, in fact the whole project from the very beginning has been a wonderful mixture of the totally bizarre, laugh-out-loud funny and in the realms of the ridiculous. "

After the show, the garden will be relocated to Pensthorpe Nature Reserve.

Alan Partridge's new podcast series is the fourth in 'From the Oasthouse', an Audible original podcast. The podcast offers his unique perspective on some of the smallest issues facing the nation today, including: stately homes, British porches, what life was like in 1994, the health of his assistant and his return to modelling.
